Anticipation

This is another of my recent works, mixed water media on handmade paper. It was based on figure drawings during a session with a model, Misha had such interesting costumes, she was so much fun to draw and to paint.

Intrepid

New art work from this summer - acrylic on gold leaf. Lots of fun to paint, another new surface to work with.

New Profile Picture

I'm trying out a new picture for my profile. This is a miniature mixed media portrait that I will probably use in a collage.

Summer update

I can't believe that the summer is flying by. It has been extremely busy - two workshops, a 50th Anniversary party for my parents, birthday's, visits with family, some kind of summer sinus thing, etc. I have been cleaning up the studio and taking an inventory. Lots of new work to post. Keep a look out - you will be getting email notifications soon!

Hope everyone out there is having lots of fun this summer.

Take care,
Laura

Sketch Book page

Getting things lined up for the Chesapeake Art Show this weekend, the first of the season. The image below is a sketch from yesterday.

A page from my sketch book

This image is a page from my sketch book. I have been doing these graphic "doodles" for the last 6 to 8 months and really enjoy them. It started as a way to keep my hands busy during a necessary, but boring 2 day seminar on retirement planning. Now, I find them very relaxing. Initially, they were just in black ink and just a couple of weeks ago, I started using colored pens as well.

New Monoprints

A number of years ago, I enjoyed monoprints. A while back I had access to a printing press and made a stack of them. The two in this post are on their way to a show at the Riverview Gallery with a spring planting, farming theme. It was so much fun to do these prints. These were made using water-based printing ink on a plate. Then I drew into the ink and ran it through a press.

Show news and paintings

Hope everyone has been staying warm this week, just another typical March here in Hampton Roads.
I have now heard from two of the shows that I applied to. I'll be doing the Chesapeake Art Show and Stockley Gardens this spring. More information on these to follow.
Also, I am posting two new paintings. The one on the left is a row of pears in mixed media. The other is a whimsical guitar painting in water media.

Katie Dog

I haven't painted any of my "Kaleidoscopia" animals in a while, so today I painted one that I had drawn a couple of months ago. I'm trying a new technique that I learned in a workshop where there is some drawing done in acrylic paint.

This is a painting of an English Setter named Katie. We always called her Katie Dog and she was with us for 17 years.

Pairings Series

Here is a painting that I finished in January, but have not posted before. It is mixed media and is part of my "Pairings" series. It is based on a picture that I took in New York city several years ago. When I visit my sister (who lives in NYC) I always take lots of photos.

February Happenings

February has been a busy month so far. I participated in a show at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and had a couple of sales. Always a good thing. I am working on a painting that will be used as a poster for a show this spring. I'll post it when it's finished.

The most time consuming thing I've been working on is setting up a new computer - installing all my programs and moving data from the old one. I spent most of the weekend on it and I'm still not finished. I am running both of them now - the old one is just about at the end of it's useful life.

Pepper

This is a painting that was just finished this month. It is 5x7 and is a mixture of several different types of water media. It is worked in many layers over an acrylic medium. Paint is put on and taken off until it works. Usually, I would frame something this size to be approximately 14x16, however, it could be framed as is in a 5x7 frame.

January News

I was thinking that things are kind of quiet in the art world, but they really aren't. January has been busy - I just finished participating in a show at Norfolk Collegiate and will be in one at Nansemond Suffolk Academy at the end of the month. Also, this is the time that a lot of show applications go in. Now comes the waiting game to see which ones will result in an acceptance letter. I have also finished two new pieces and have more in progress.

The group of friends that I paint, the Blue Eggs, are participating in a group show at the Larchmont Branch of the Norfolk Public Library.

A friend's son needed help designing a patch for his training squadron. He is a Marine aviator and the training was to be in December. The guys had an idea - a girl in a santa suit, but needed the actual drawing. Several of those asked submitted a design and mine was chosen.

Here is the patch and a picture of the pilots wearing them after their training was completed.

It was exciting to be able to help out and when I received the patch and picture I was just thrilled. It was great to have my work chosen but incredible to see it in use.
