October 2010

October 2010 was a very busy month. With three outdoor shows in a row plus painting new work, etc., it just flew by leaving me exhausted. I am nearly back to normal and ready to paint. I have been invited to join a local art organization, the Elizabeth River Artists. My work will be on display as part of this group at Harbor View Medical Center beginning tomorrow, Oct. 27th.

The painting shown above was completed just in time for the Stockley Gardens show on the 16th and 17th of this month. It is 23x30 framed and is a combination of acrylic, watercolor, gouache and watercolor crayons on handmade paper.

Thanks for taking time to read my blog.

Getting geared up for the three shows that I have scheduled in October. I have two new pieces in process and hope to get to at least one more. The picture above is an acrylic painting called "Rogue Light". It is 10x20 and I finished it the night before the Seawall Art Show in August.

Tidal Flow

Here is a new mixed media painting. The original is 24 x 36. I will be posting several new pieces in the next few weeks as I get ready for 3 shows in the month of October.

Pirate's Booty

The Seawall Art Show was quite a success - the weather was absolutely wonderful and sales were great. The painting that was in my last post has been renamed. As I spoke with a man who later decided to purchase this painting, he began to show me what he saw when he looked at the painting. I agreed with him, it was pointing out jewels and pearls, etc. So, together we renamed this painting "Pirate's Booty".

Blue Lace

Here is a new abstract of mine painted in watercolor on Yupo (synthetic paper). This paper was originally used in the printing industry. It is slick and non-absorbent, the paint literally sits on the surface . You need to be patient and careful or all of your hard work will simply lift off when you apply more layers. I tried this several years ago and didn't care for it. I have painted several abstract or semi-abstract paintings with it and find that I really love it, at least at the present time.

Web Site Issues

A couple of weeks ago, I was notified by my web host that my site had been potentially targeted by hackers. I needed to replace the existing information, so I decided to do a completely new site. What a job! It is still in progress and probably will be for another month. There are a couple of pages there now and I will be adding them as they are ready. http://lauragibbs-studio.com/

As you have probably noticed, my work is becoming more and more abstract. The painting on the right is the largest painting I have worked on. It is 30x60, acrylic with gold and silver leaf on canvas. It was so much fun, the gold and silver are kind of embedded just in a few areas, so that they kind of peek out. I was intimidated initially, but pleased with the finished work. I will be working larger in the future though probably not this large.
The name of this painting is Muse.

Prints and cards will be available on my Fine Art America page http://fineartamerica.com/art/all/laura+gibbs/all

Winter went by in a whirl wind and Spring is almost as busy. I have been painting and will have new work on display this weekend and also at the Stockley show the following weekend. I have been working on mixed media and abstracts mostly with a few others thrown into the mix. The painting above is one of the mixed media works. In addition to painting, I have been out of town several times, gardening, gardening, gardening and helping my sister decorate her new co-op in New York.

I will in section D this year (as opposed to my usual section C) due to construction at the Children's Museum. Please stop in and visit me in my new tent and location.
